چکیده

Simple relations for the onset of competing brittle and quasiplastic damage modes in Hertzian contact are presented. The formulations are expressed in terms of well-documented material parameters, elastic modulus, toughness, and hardness, enabling a priori predictions for given ceramics and indenter radii. Data from a range of selected ceramic (and other) materials are used to demonstrate the applicability of the critical load relations, and to evaluate coefficients in these relations. The results confirm that quasi plasticity is highly competitive with fracture in ceramics, over a sphere radius range 1–10 mm. Implications concerning the brittleness of ceramics in the context of indentation size effects are discussed.

Engineering ductile fracture in brittle-matrix composites

This letter describes a newly discovered phenomenon: ductile fracture in cementitious materials. The brittle nature of materials such as concrete and ceramics has prompted the development of various approaches to enhance their fracture toughness. Fibre reinforcement has been the common focus in the toughening of the brittle materials. Two types of fracture have been observed to date in cementit...

Universal Size Effect Law and Effect of Crack Depth on Quasi-Brittle Structure Strength

In cohesive fracture of quasi-brittle materials such as concrete, rock, fiber composites, tough ceramics, rigid foams, sea ice, and wood, one can distinguish six simple and easily modeled asymptotic cases: the asymptotic behaviors of very small and very large structures, structures failing at crack initiation from a smooth surface and those with a deep notch or preexisting deep crack, the purel...

A universal relation for edge chipping from sharp contacts in brittle materials: A simple means of toughness evaluation

An analysis of chipping fracture in brittle solids is presented. Cracks are introduced into the edges of selected materials, including soda-lime glass and fine-grain ceramics, using a Vickers indenter in monotonic loading. The ensuing chip morphology is examined and shown to exhibit a certain geometrical similarity, independent of material properties. A simple universal relation is derived for ...

Dynamic and Quasi-Static Tensile Properties of Structural S400 Steel

The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

New Development of the ]-Based Fracture Testing Technique for Ceramic-Matrix Composites

The J-based fracture testing technique is newly extended to experimentally determine the tension-softening (a-6) relations in ceramic-matrix composites. The J-based technique originally proposed for concrete has been well established for quasi-brittle materials where the fracture process is primarily dominated by the formation of a fracture process zone and the contribution of the crack tip tou...
